Nursery Theme???

Unlike many mom-to-be's, I seem to have a terrible time planning for a nursery. I see ideas online and in the stores, but nothing really seems to inspire me. Add the fact that I am having triplets, and it can get down right overwhelming. What color do I paint? What should I hang on the walls? Do I need all the little accessories for the nursery to be complete? I also wonder how important a theme really is. I mean the babies will never remember it. And while it looks "cute" to the outside observer, is it really worth all that time, money, and energy?

I know I probably sound pretty grumpy here, but I think I'm feeling a need for things to be as simple as possible. So when I ogle over all the beautiful and elaborate nursery themes that I see online, it all seems just a little over the top for me.

So I'm asking you out there...anyone have any great & simple ideas? Again, it has to be gender neutral since it is for 2 boys and a girl, and I'm really not into things being too "cute". For example, I don't want anything with a lot of animals or any type of Disney theme. My ideal situation is to just have a color and a general theme that I can incorporate simply through wall stickers or stencils. You may get the impression here that I'm not excited about getting the room ready for the babies, but that's not the case at all, I really am! I think the whole process is what gets to me so I need help to get my thoughts together and get this room together before the end of December!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

  1. You're on the right track here! Keeping it simple is a great idea. If I could do it again, I'd skip the bedding sets and just go for solid colors (I know BRU sells individual pieces at a great price). And those cute bumper pads are cute, but totally unecessary. I've seen a lot of cute vinyl wall stickers on etsy.com - you could have a custom one made and incorporate the babies names or a favorite scripture verse... Or you could wait until the babies arrive and decorate with framed photos of them, keepsakes from the hospital arranged in shadowbox frames, etc. I'd just pick a color you love, paint the room, and let the rest fall into place. You're so right that you're babies will have no idea what's going on (Aaron didn't sleep in his own room until almost 9 months!). Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

  2. Nope, don't spend much time on it! I used leftover paint that my grandparents had used for their bedroom :) It was one green wall and three rather white ones. I had no theme or plans and yet all the hand-me-downs and gifts I got went together so well in the room. I had a friend who just made the walls this kind of cantalope color and that was pretty nice. This baby's room is going to be like a blueish turquiose color with like cream trim and no baby stuff at all because it is also going to be our guest bedroom, so I don't just want it gender neutral but age neutral as well :)

I'm terrible at describing colors :)

Oh and I like the above comment's suggestion about decorating with photos. That's what I prefer to have on my walls, pictures of the little ones and other familty members.

  3. this made me laugh. when we moved into our house i was 8 mo. pregnant w/ jacob. i didn't know we were having a boy, but we couldn't agree on a color so we painted the room blue anyways b/c i liked the color! =) more is less...there will be SO MUCH STUFF that comes along w/ the babies anyways. find a color YOU like - you'll be spending alot of time in that room!

  4. Julie,

I feel the same way!!! Every time I look online I feel completely overwhelmed, and all the bedding at the main baby stores just look too "cutesie" / cheap (read: made in china) for me. Anyhow, yesterday I finally found what I'm looking for (and yes, that's why I am up early looking online on a Sat. morning--well, that and the fact that sleep is no longer comfortable and I was starving...). So, I went to etsy.com and put "baby quilts" in the search and you can even limit the price limit. The bedding is much more traditional and even some that look vintage. I just plan on getting coordinating sheets from either target or babiesrus and haven't decided whether or not to get a bumper. Hope that helps!
Can't wait to see what you come up with.

  5. I didn't know what I was having, and EVERYONE said "well, then you're going to get a done of green and yellow!" So I rebelled, and went with bright orange. My little brother walked in (without the furniture in there) and said he felt like he was on a post-it note!
But with that said, we went with an animal/jungle theme, but only in a couple places. Mostly, it's just orange and white, and very cheery. I really like it.
As for all the "stuff", the only things that I've found worthwhile have been the sheet and the mobile (worked every time around 4-5 months!). The bedding sets are the BIGGEST waste of money...the bumpers are considered dangerous by most pediatricians...I think it's a personal choice, but I know that my little guy would just use his for a footstool to climb out! And they poop/puke on everything, so what's the point of the big comforter? No, I just made it a fun kid's room. And now? His favorite color is orange :) :) :)
Still praying for you and SO excited for you!!!

  6. Thanks for the suggestions ladies! These are great and it's also nice to know that I'm not the only one who thinks simple is best! Now just to get into the new house so I can actually start decorating...hopefully within the next few days!

  7. what about black and white? Then each baby could maybe have a personalized color? I've never decorated specifically for the kids! You've probably been through the same thing, but when we've gone house shopping we have seen some atrociously painted pink and purple rooms. I say keep the background neutral. The toys and clothes and pictures and everything will satisfy their need for stimulation.

  8. Ours is very simple, in part because I'm not that sort of person as far as elaborate decorating goes, and in part because we're renting.

We hung up quilts from our childhood across the nursery, and a few framed pictures. And we put up a little shelf for stuffed animals.

  9. I don't know if you want advice from a college student, but I'm throwing it out there--I agree with Leigh--definitely pick a color that you and Rich like because you'll be spending OODLES of time in that room with your bundles of joy. :)

Not sure if it's your thing, but a warm yellow is always cheery. Martha Stewart's website has some great ideas too.
